President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the final amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act, marking a new step in Nigeria’s effort to improve the conduct of elections and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
The President announced that the changes were made after reviewing lessons from recent election cycles and identifying areas that required clearer procedures and stronger safeguards. He said the amendments focus on improving how elections are conducted and removing uncertainties that may affect credibility.
According to the President, the decision was guided by the need to build trust in the electoral system. He noted that citizens must feel confident when they arrive at polling units and remain assured that results announced reflect their votes. He explained that such trust does not happen automatically but comes from clear laws and proper implementation.
President Tinubu said the amendments are designed to close existing gaps in the law and provide clearer guidance for election officials, political actors, and voters. He added that the goal is to strengthen transparency and make the process easier to understand for everyone involved.
He also commended the National Assembly for its role in reviewing and passing the amendments. He said lawmakers showed a strong sense of responsibility and worked with the executive arm to complete the process. He noted that cooperation between both arms of government remains important in improving democratic institutions.
The President stressed that the amendments are not about political advantage but about improving the system that governs elections in the country. He said Nigeria’s democracy must continue to grow through regular review of its laws and procedures.
He added that improving election laws is part of a wider responsibility to protect the will of the people and promote peaceful and credible elections. He said the government will continue to work toward strengthening democratic structures and maintaining public trust in the electoral process.
The Electoral Act, first signed into law in 2022, guides the conduct of elections in Nigeria, including voter accreditation, result management, and the roles of election officials. The new amendments are expected to shape preparations for future elections across the country.
