Tunji Disu with President Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, bringing an end to his tenure as head of the Nigeria Police Force. The President said the resignation followed a formal letter from Egbetokun in which he cited pressing family considerations.

In a statement, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s long service to the country and the police institution. He praised his dedication and professionalism, noting that his work contributed to efforts to improve internal security across Nigeria.

Following the resignation, the President approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect. The appointment comes at a time when the country continues to face security concerns in several regions.

President Tinubu said he expects the new acting police chief to provide steady leadership and direction for the Force. He noted that Disu’s operational experience and leadership background would support the police in carrying out its duties.

The President also stated that the appointment process will follow the provisions of the Police Act 2020. He said the Nigeria Police Council will be convened soon to review the appointment and consider Disu for confirmation as the substantive Inspector General of Police. After the council’s review, his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation in line with the law.

The leadership change marks a new phase for the Nigeria Police Force as it continues to carry out its responsibility of maintaining law and order. The Inspector General of Police is the highest ranking officer in the Force and plays a key role in coordinating security operations across the country.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s position on strengthening national security and maintaining a professional and accountable police institution. He said the government will continue to support the Force in carrying out its constitutional duties.

The appointment of an acting police chief ensures continuity in leadership while the formal confirmation process is completed.
