Gunther Fehlinger-Jahn, the Chairman of the Austrian Committee for NATO Enlargement, has declared his support for the independence of Biafra. In a message shared on social media, Fehlinger-Jahn said he endorses the Biafra Republic and expressed regret that the international community did not help during the Nigerian Civil War in 1967.
Fehlinger-Jahn, who has been involved in European political affairs, referred to his statement as “The Fehlinger Doctrine: Freedom of Biafra.” He apologized to the people of Biafra, saying that world powers failed to act when the region sought independence more than five decades ago.
The Biafra movement remains a sensitive topic in Nigeria. It recalls the civil war that lasted from 1967 to 1970 after the region attempted to break away from Nigeria. Millions of people lost their lives due to the conflict and famine.
Fehlinger-Jahn’s statement has drawn attention on social media, with some praising his boldness and others warning that foreign leaders should respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.
He also tagged the United States President’s official account in his message, calling for international recognition of the Biafran cause. Although the Nigerian government has not issued a response, discussions have spread across various online platforms.
Observers say the remark could renew conversations about self-determination and regional identity in West Africa. However, analysts also caution that such declarations from foreign figures may affect diplomatic relations.
Fehlinger-Jahn’s post adds a new voice to the long-standing debate over Biafra, reminding the world of a painful chapter in Nigeria’s history that still stirs emotions today.
