President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his warm greetings to Chief Margaret Shonekan, the former First Lady of Nigeria, on her 84th birthday, marked on October 28, 2025.

Chief Margaret Shonekan is the wife of the late Chief Ernest Shonekan, who served as Head of the Interim National Government and was also the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the United African Company (UAC). President Tinubu praised her for her lifelong humility, kindness, and dedication to public service.

In his message, the President described Mrs Shonekan as a woman who devoted her life to strengthening public institutions and improving education in Nigeria. He recalled her early years at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), where she began her career as a Trainee Assistant Registrar in 1965. She rose through the ranks to become Deputy Registrar and later served as a Federal Civil Service Commissioner between 1986 and 1994.

In 1995, Mrs Shonekan became the Head of the National Office of WAEC, leading the institution during a challenging period until 2000. President Tinubu commended her courage and patriotism, noting that she returned to WAEC in 1994 after serving briefly as Nigeria’s First Lady for three months.

The President said her work in improving educational standards and promoting moral and academic excellence remains a lasting example for Nigerians. He prayed for her continued health, strength, and peace of mind.

“Chief Margaret Shonekan’s life of service, grace, and humility continues to inspire generations,” President Tinubu said. “May God bless her with many more years in good health and happiness.”

The message was signed by Mr Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, on October 27, 2025.
