Elon Musk has announced a new project from his artificial intelligence company, xAI, called Grokipedia. The initiative seeks to build an open-source and complete collection of human knowledge, with the long-term plan to preserve copies beyond Earth.
In a post shared on his X account, Musk wrote:
Nice work by the @xAI team on http://Grokipedia.com. The goal here is to create an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge. Then place copies of that etched in a stable oxide in orbit, the Moon and Mars to preserve it for the future. Foundation.”
The idea behind Grokipedia is to safeguard the world’s collective information and ensure it survives for generations to come. Musk explained that copies of the archive would be etched on a “stable oxide” — a material believed to withstand extreme temperatures and radiation — and stored in space, including Earth’s orbit, the Moon, and Mars.
xAI, founded in 2023, has quickly become a key player in artificial intelligence development.
