Elon Musk, founder and CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI.

Elon Musk has announced a new project from his artificial intelligence company, xAI, called Grokipedia. The initiative seeks to build an open-source and complete collection of human knowledge, with the long-term plan to preserve copies beyond Earth.

In a post shared on his X account, Musk wrote:
Nice work by the @xAI team on http://Grokipedia.com. The goal here is to create an open source, comprehensive collection of all knowledge. Then place copies of that etched in a stable oxide in orbit, the Moon and Mars to preserve it for the future. Foundation.”

The idea behind Grokipedia is to safeguard the world’s collective information and ensure it survives for generations to come. Musk explained that copies of the archive would be etched on a “stable oxide” — a material believed to withstand extreme temperatures and radiation — and stored in space, including Earth’s orbit, the Moon, and Mars.

xAI, founded in 2023, has quickly become a key player in artificial intelligence development. The company’s earlier creation, Grok, a chatbot integrated with the X platform, demonstrated Musk’s goal of merging AI with open knowledge systems. Grokipedia appears to extend that mission, this time focusing on preservation rather than interaction.

While technical details remain limited, experts suggest Grokipedia could rely on advanced etching or optical storage technologies similar to those used in space preservation projects such as the Lunar Library. If successful, the archive would serve as a permanent backup of human civilization’s scientific, historical, and cultural data.

The concept of space-based archives is not new, but Musk’s plan introduces a larger scale and a global, open-access format. Supporters view it as a step toward protecting human knowledge against potential global disasters, while critics question the logistics and costs of storing data off-world.

For now, Grokipedia.com is live as a placeholder site, signaling the early stages of what Musk describes as a “foundation” for the future of knowledge preservation. Whether it becomes a living library among the stars or remains a symbolic project, Musk’s latest idea has once again drawn attention to the intersection of technology, curiosity, and humanity’s desire to endure beyond Earth.
